Encoding.com, the world's largest video encoding service provider has announced the private beta launch for Vid.ly, the first Universal Video URL service.  Vid.ly radically simplifies the preparation and delivery of video to all mobile devices and browsers, thus solving the biggest challenge facing publishers of online video.  Users only need to publish a short URL provided by Vid.ly for each source video and the service will deliver the optimized video.  The free Vid.ly beta program, which includes encoding, storage, and delivery, begins today and is available to the first 1,000 qualified users.

I wonder if the bigger question is whether the video's content is worth the audience's time? You could make a 6 1/2 hour movie with nothing more then the empire state building (thanks Warhol) but it doesn't mean that people will stick around for it. That's why viral videos are so popular. It gives the audience what they want - short/to the point/entertaining content that is easily sharable.
