According to the Environmental Protection Agency, over 130 million cellular devices are replaced each year within the United States. Many of these devices end up in landfills creating about 65,000 tons of environmentally hazardous materials, annually. Cellular circuit boards and screen displays are comprised of toxic compounds such as arsenic, antimony, beryllium, cadmium, lead, and mercury. Additional contaminants can be found in the metal screws, inserts, coatings, paints, foams and labels. Many of these pieces, along with most plastic shells are treated with brominated flame retardants.
