4medica Ambulatory iEHR Now Provides One Patient-Centric View of Enterprise Data

Posted by: Jennifer York

Jennifer York

4medica announced today that its 4medica Ambulatory Cloud Integrated Electronic Health Record (iEHR(SM)) version 10.4 was certified as a Complete EHR on Oct. 20, 2011 by the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT®), an ONC-ATCB. This complete certification marks a major milestone in taking the company to an unprecedented level of EHR cloud integration distinctive to the health I.T. industry. 4medica now offers physicians a truly integrated iEHR to establish bi-directional data connectivity and seamless information exchange across ambulatory and inpatient care settings.

The ONC-ATCB 2011/2012 certification program tests and certifies that Complete EHRs meet all of the 2011/2012 criteria and EHR Modules meet one or more -- but not all -- of the criteria approved by the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) for either eligible provider or hospital technology.

Electronic Health Records Company, Practice Fusion Raises $23 Million From Founders Fund

Posted by: Jennifer York

Jennifer York

Electronic health records company Practice Fusion on Tuesday announced that it's raised a $23 million Series B round led by Founders Fund, with help from Artis Capital Management and Glynn Capital Management, as well as existing investors Morgenthaler Ventures and Felicis Ventures. The new funds bring the company's total raised to $30 million.

Since Obama's mandate that all medical practices switch over to electronic health records, Practice Fusion has positioned itself to be the go-to resource for the 80% of doctors who practice in groups of nine or fewer, who simply can't afford to implement an electronic health record system on site. These days only 10% of doctors have electronic health records, but as the average doctor makes $120,000 a year, that doesn't leave a lot of room for paying an IT person to manage the health record system.

Intuit Acquires SaaS healthcare company Medfusion for $91 million

Posted by: Matt Childs

Matt Childs
Medfusion makes health record software and software that lets patients communicate online with doctors, clinics, and other healthcare providers to schedule appointments, pay bills, request prescription refills, fill in medical forms, and review lab results. Its software is used by more than 30,000 healthcare providers, most of them small businesses. This acquisition will accelerate Intuit’s healthcare strategy. Intuit already has a healthcare presence: in 2005, its Quicken Health division developed Intuit Expense Manager for managing healthcare bills, and last year it launched Expense Tracker for paying healthcare bills online. A very large portion of the healthcare market is small physicians’ offices. This strategy pretty much keeps Intuit within the small business category but adds vertical specific expertise. I like the strategy.

With the U.S. government pushing for digitization of the healthcare sector, there is a lot of interest in the SaaS healthcare sector. I have recently done interviews with CEOs of healthcare companies including Kryptic, with revenue in the double digits, which uses email applications to bring collaboration to the healthcare industry. Navinet has about 40% of U.S. providers using its multipayer portal that automates health plans. Phytel, with $20 million to $50 million in annual revenue, looks to motivate patients to reconnect with physicians, optimize healthcare with better decision-making data at the point of care, and extend its reach beyond the walls of a practice.

Intuit last week reported strong third quarter results. Q3 revenue grew 13% to $1.6 million, exceeding its guidance. Operating income was $888 million, up 16%. EPS was $1.78, up 21%.

Intuit reported strong growth across all segments. Employee Management Solutions revenue grew 13%. Revenue from Financial Management Solutions grew 16%, Payment Solutions was up 8%, Consumer Tax Group grew 12%, Accounting Professionals grew 15%, and Financial Institutions grew 21%. Other Business revenue grew 20%.

Internet Legislation and Piracy

Net Neutrality in the US and the Digital Economy Act in the UK are attempts by Governments to start to legislate the Internet.Certainly the Digital Economy Act in the UK was written to prevent the piracy of film, music, photography etc. For what it's worth I don't agree with the measures in the Act, which gives the Government power to checktraffic and potentially block sites involved in the breach of copyright...
