Das bereits im März 2010 angekündigte Online Office-Paket des Internet-Dienstleisters 1&1 ist am 07. Juni offiziell freigegeben worden.

Damit gesellt sich das Unternehmen zu den anderen Dienstleistern wie Google oder Microsoft, welche ebenfalls mit einem Online-Office-Paket aufwarten.

Google has announced a series of updates to Google Docs which are sure to please everyone who relies on the free cloud-based service. The documents editor received additions such as a margin ruler, tab stops, comments, a re-worked system for placing and maintaining bullets and numbers and support for real-time collaboration of up to 50 people. Spreadsheets now allows for cells to be edited from the forumla bar, the use of auto-fill and the dragging and dropping of columns. Overall, everything is said to be much faster, smoother and intuitive. Microsoft is to push it software as a service (SaaS) output further with a range of applications for Office users, it has been reported.

The Office Web Apps package will soon be given a full release and the company is confident that, containing web-based versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, it will help fight off other cloud-based challengers.

In an interview with PCWorld, Stephen Elop, the president of Microsoft's Business Division, explained how the company saw SaaS as a 'constructive disruption' to the corporate IT market and that these new services would compliment others

He added: "We have to be the leaders. We have to be the ones who make the tough decisions, drive the disruption and lead the industry in what we're doing."

"The quality of the experience has to be unquestionably consistent with, as good as, and aligned with everything that people already know."

Another key release this year will be SharePoint, the SaaS solution that helps businesses collaborate better and become more flexible.
