Success Factors is making a big play into the business intelligence market with its acquisition of YouCalc, a SaaS service out of Denmark for doing analytics across multiple applications, including Google Analytics, Mailchimp and Salesforce.com.

The move heightens competitiveness in the fast growing market for SaaS analytics. And it highlights the marked improvements that have come in the past year, thanks in large part due to the innovations made by SaaS providers.

I wonder if IT is getting tired of being seen as the fuddy-duddy of the enterprise. There's plenty of advice out there about the need for uptight IT departments to lighten up and give business users more freedom to select technology solutions they need to do their jobs. Like the kid who's denied permission to ride a skateboard and goes ahead and does it on the sly -- either buying his own board or using a friend's -- some business users will use unsanctioned hardware and/or software.

More than 95 percent of organizations expect to maintain or grow their use of software as a service (SaaS), according to a survey by Gartner, Inc. Survey respondents cited significant integration requirements and a change in sourcing strategy as the top two reasons for adoption followed by high total cost of ownership (TCO).

Still, Gartner found that most companies still do not have policies governing the evaluation and use of SaaS with only 39 percent of respondents indicating that such a policy or process exists, up just 1 percent from 38 percent in 2008.
