The move heightens competitiveness in the fast growing market for SaaS analytics. And it highlights the marked improvements that have come in the past year, thanks in large part due to the innovations made by SaaS providers.

YouCalc is a case in point. The company has developed an application that performs analytics for multiple SaaS applications. It integrates with any application that have a REST or SOAP API.

Geo visualization: Making Better Business Decisions

Posted by: We Are Cloud

We Are Cloud
In today’s economy, the need for making the right business decisions is imperative. That’s why adding location intelligence to your data can give you a better insight into your data, and is useful for making those all-important critical business decisions.

Just about any industry sector can benefit from location intelligence. Financial, insurance, retail, communications, even governmental agencies can benefit from geographical information displays (e.g. through Google Maps) as they give you a real picture of 'where your data is'. Take the heatmap feature in Bime as an example.

The great thing about the heatmap is that it is not simply a pretty picture - hover over the heatpoints and you can bring up the detailed data lying behind them by clicking on it. This is particularly helpful when different areas of focus are close together, like on the dashboard above. By clicking on "Rendering mode" you can switch between the heatmap or graduated circles view. You can filter your view by states by checking or unchecking the relevant boxes under "attributes" on the right. You can also filter by the measure (profit) by using the slider below the list of attributes.

Geographic data visualizations can help businesses answer fundamental questions, such as:

How SaaS technology is helping and Kentucky based Police Department fight crime.

Posted by: Jennifer York

SaaS technology helps mid-sized Ky. PD fight crimePolice officers are constantly collecting information — the difficulty lies in effectively using that information over time

The Erlanger Police Department counts in its ranks roughly 40 sworn officers and serves a population of approximately 17,000 residents in northwestern Kenton County, Kentucky. Located astride a major freeway interchange (I-75 and I-275), Erlanger is a bedroom community just ten short miles (and a handful of bridges) south of the Ohio River and downtown Cincinnati. While the waters of the Ohio tend to keep most gang-on-gang violence from encroaching on what the locals call “The Friendship City,” there is crime there, and officers at Erlanger PD take seriously their mission to fight that crime. Since mid-2008 Erlanger PD has been using information sharing software with powerful search technology to increase the department’s effectiveness.

Officer Steve Castor of the Erlanger Police Department took some time out of his busy day to tell PoliceOne about his agency’s decision to deploy Information Builders’ WebFOCUS Magnify software. The agency uses this solution to generate real-time search results for police officers in the field, as well as to provide detailed activity reports and analytics to command staff tasked with making decisions about staffing and patrol assignments.

Police agencies, Castor points out, are constantly capturing and collecting information. The problem lies in giving officers ongoing access to that information over time.

Does SaaS Make Sense For Small Business Business Intelligence Solutions?

Posted by: Jennifer York

Great article written by VelocIT:

Does SaaS make sense for small business BI solutions?

This a good question to ask when you are looking at using BI in your small business. How does software-as-a-service BI function in a small business? How can these tools benefit customers and other stakeholders? Let’s dive in.
Increased Productivity with Little Investment
Bob Dieterle, senior VP & GM of Smart Online, calls SaaS BI applications a good replacement tool for “backend IT functions including the management of operating system licenses, upgrading patches and fixes and managing servers and networks which distracts the small business from their core mission.”
He also says the ability to get a “360-degree view of critical information and data” across the organization wherever you can access the Internet gives you a serious advantage in making timely decisions from HR to sales to responding to customers.
Take this example. A small consultancy of 10 people all working remotely can benefit from a SaaS BI application because they manage their own sales pipeline and prospecting. Organizational benefits include:
·         Each consultant can input prospect data into the tool, assign sales process tasks and gain an educated guess at sales probability.
·         The individual consultant can instantly develop a quote for the sales lead with pre-defined parameters – right inside the tool.
·         The CEO or owner can keep up with what’s happening with each consultant via a daily report because all information is updated in real-time and accessible from the Web-based BI tool.
·         The owner or chief executive can customize a dashboard to track consultant productivity and revenue forecasts. He or she can dig deeper into individual prospect data or pull reports on individual sales representatives.
“For a small business owner, having application that is scalable depending on fluctuations in one’s business is essential,” Dietrle says.
He points out that SaaS BI solutions don’t always have the upfront costs or lengthy contract obligations that traditional BI solutions require. This is appealing to the small business owner who is used to “doing more with less,” and has that as an overall business strategy.
A Transparent Business Picture
Wayne Morris, CEO of myDIALs and writer of the Dialed In blog, founded a SaaS company after traditional BI tools didn’t give him a clear picture of his business He says that SaaS BI can enhance the value of internal performance metrics and lend transparency to the organization. Sharing this data with customers and other stakeholders can do several good things for the business including:
·         Enhancing customer satisfaction by providing transparency into the service quality and the company’s outcomes – Think healthcare quality scores, automotive testing and government fund responsibility.
·         Engaging the customer directly in the continuous improvement cycle.
·         Extending performance management into the customer’s processes such as procurement and forecasting.
Morris says this transparency is important to the small business because “proactively exposing performance metrics enables a productive conversation based on factual data and could lead to some breakthrough decisions made jointly with the customer.”
Other impactful results are improvements to efficiency, service and product quality as well as more consistent outcomes. He calls this system “operational BI.”
How do you find an adequate operational BI solution? Morris suggests looking for the following criteria in your SaaS BI solution:
·         Real time updates – This needs to happen multiple times per day.
·         Ease of use – To make decisions based on the data, it has to be accessible and easily digested.
·         Continued improvement – Focusing on business drivers and performance measures.
·         Data how you want it – It needs to be flexible based on how you see it, filter it, receive alerts, collaborate, analyze and give scenarios.
So, we’ve made the case for an operational BI solution…where does SaaS play a role? Morris answers:
“A SaaS Operational BI solution is an excellent vehicle to provide timely, relevant information to people across multiple companies. SaaS delivers value quickly and customers pay for value as it is received, since they pay a subscription based on users or usage.  There is a clear incentive for the [SaaS BI] vendor to ensure customer satisfaction since if the customer is not satisfied they simply don't renew the subscription. There is no such thing as ‘shelf-ware’ in the SaaS model.”

Fujitsu and SAP to Launch Japanese Version of SaaS Business Intelligence Solution

Posted by: Brent Wilson

Brent Wilson

Fujitsu Limited and SAP AG today announced they are jointly developing a Japanese-language version of the recently launched SAP BusinessObjects(TM) BI OnDemand solution, which will be made available to the Japanese market using the cloud environment of Fujitsu.

SAP BusinessObjects BI OnDemand is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) business intelligence (BI) solution addressing the previously unmet market need for a single product that equips users with a complete, integrated BI toolset. SAP started SaaS BI solution in 2006 and currently has more than 260,000 subscribers. With this solution, people can easily access all of their on-demand and on-premise data with little to no prior experience or training. Since SAP BusinessObjects Explorer software capabilities are included, users can quickly access and navigate business data from any source. A Japanese version of SAP BusinessObjects BI OnDemand, currently in development by Fujitsu and SAP, is scheduled to be released in the Japanese market in May 2010 using the cloud environment of Fujitsu.

The solution will enable customers to use on-demand offerings from the SAP BusinessObjects portfolio without having to build their own systems, realizing comprehensive information usage quickly, at a low-scaling cost. Additionally, in combination with other SaaS services, new forms of information usage in the cloud will be made possible.

5 SaaS Business Intelligence (BI) Trends to Watch in 2010

Article written by Quentin Gallivan @ PivotLink

Software as a Service (SaaS) BI adoption is undergoing a sea-change. Industry-watchers expect implementations to grow steadily in the coming year, as businesses seek to deploy intuitive BI tools and applications cost-effectively to more users, reduce time to value and time to scale, and lower capital expenditures. In many respects, these are historic times for BI.

Amid the tumult and noise, it’s important to understand the context for SaaS BI adoption, and why it has rapidly become a viable solution for businesses in a variety of industries. Here are five developing trends that promise to fuel the growth of SaaS BI.

 1. SaaS BI implementations will grow at a faster rate than on-premise BI.

The era of high-risk, complex, and time-consuming BI implementations may be finally coming to an end.  It is rapidly being replaced by a new era that demands quick BI wins defined by specific business use-cases. Time to value is imperative in the new era of BI. Projects must be implemented in days, not months or years, and provide an immediate return to the business user.

SaaS BI is experiencing an uptick in investment, market visibility, and user adoption. Basic reporting and analysis have become a commodity, so there is little reason for any customer or business to invest in on-premise capabilities with the price/performance ratio that SaaS vendors offer.

We will see on-premise BI vendors’ revenue streams shrink as the SaaS BI value proposition goes mainstream. Successful SaaS BI vendors will be those whose offerings were designed to scale within cloud-computing architectures, and whose marginal cost per additional user approaches zero.

In addition, SaaS BI has developed into a superlative and affordable augmentation strategy for legacy BI implementations. By enabling IT to better support business with highly-secure, easy-to-use tools, and right-time data, SaaS BI will be viewed as the best tool for high value, quick BI wins at an affordable cost.
