The new version is powered by the AtomSphere user community to reduce the complexity of cloud and software-as-a-service (SaaS) application integration. Dell Boomi's newest offering has been designed with capabilities which include: improved intelligence for recommending customer-validated data maps and functions, a series of proactive customer communication services, integrated functionality for business protocols and enhanced functionality for keeping track of integrations and service uptime. Medium and large enterprise customers leveraging the AtomSphere Fall 11 will benefit from ease in migration to cloud computing as the solution allows integration through customer dictated pathways as well as monitoring and maintenance tools.

AtomSphere easily connects new applications and existing applications even amid complex data connections. While AtomSphere's multi-tenant design makes it easy for Boomi to provide updates to customers faster it simultaneously supports reductions in time and costs for application and data integration.

Cloud Integration Buying Spree?

Post by Phil Wainewright

OK, I’ve read all the coverage of Dell’s acquisition yesterday of cloud integration vendor Boomi. I’m really pleased for Bob, Rick and the team. They’re great guys, it’s a terrific company, and they’ve earned this [disclosure: earlier this year I wrote a Boomi product profile paid for by the vendor]. But Dell? I have two responses:

  • I don’t get it.
  • It worries me.

I don’t get it for the same reason it didn’t quite work back at Dreamforce 2008 to have Michael Dell come out on stage to pitch his company’s server products right after the usual extended Marc Benioff keynote telling the assembled masses why their companies don’t need to buy servers any more. It just doesn’t make sense. Is Dell going to bundle Boomi with its servers so the next on-premise app you install will integrate seamlessly to the cloud? That would be almost as absurd as imagining the consultants at Dell subsidiary Perot Systems are suddenly going to start recommending Boomi’s low-cost cloud integration in preference to the lucrative middleware projects they currently spec out.

"Cloud Washed" SaaS out of control! [Video]

Posted by: Matt Childs

A blog post from Cloud Integration provider Boomi's co-founder Rick Nucci on this topic came across the tweet stream this morning and it really hit home.

Here's what Rick had to say about it:

The 80/20 Paradox: Remembering a core value of SaaS...

It is surprising to still see articles like this where people question the fundamentals of SaaS, I mean even Lawson is now talking about a cloud edition, despite their CEO publicly proclaiming SaaS's death by August 2010 a few years back.  But what Lawson and others are doing, known as "cloud washing", helps me understand why people question the value of SaaS.

Faking SaaS Will Lead To Integration Challenges

I wonder if IT is getting tired of being seen as the fuddy-duddy of the enterprise. There's plenty of advice out there about the need for uptight IT departments to lighten up and give business users more freedom to select technology solutions they need to do their jobs. Like the kid who's denied permission to ride a skateboard and goes ahead and does it on the sly -- either buying his own board or using a friend's -- some business users will use unsanctioned hardware and/or software.

As most parents know, if a kid feels strongly about the skateboard, better to lay out some ground rules (pads and helmet, no riding on city streets), than to just outright prohibit it. Similarly, it's better for IT and business users to be open with each other about their respective needs and concerns before frustrated users go ahead and start using stuff without IT's knowledge. Ideally, the two will be able to meet in the middle, with IT realizing it needs to support a broader set of solutions and users realizing that IT has plenty of valid concerns in its role as caretaker of a company's technology.

Just like the parent, IT ultimately will be on the hook for dealing with problems arising from careless and/or clueless use. It's an even bigger issue when entire departments, rather than individual users, operate under IT's radar.

3 Signs That SaaS Is Still Immature

A new Forrester Research survey of enterprise software buyers sheds light on SaaS's blind spots: troubling security concerns, hidden integration costs, and data migration challenges.

Just when you thought it was safe to jump into the SaaS waters, a new survey finds that IT and enterprise software decision-makers don't feel totally comfortable with SaaS—namely those nagging security, integration and data migration concerns.

That's the thrust of a new Forrester Research report: "As Adoption Grows, Vendor Managers Can Help Business Users Succeed with SaaS Deployments," by principal analyst Liz Hebert. (The results are from Forrester's Enterprise and SMB Software Survey, North America And Europe, Q4 2009; the data was fielded to 2,165 IT executives and technology decision-makers located in Canada, France, Germany, United Kingdom and United States.)
