We Are Cloud

Unfortunately, not all of the We Are Cloud team were able to fly out to the US to launch Bime V3.0 at Demo Fall '11, so most of us had to make do with watching it back on video. However this doesn't make the presentation any less awesome - watch it to find out!

We did follow the proceedings live on Twitter though (almost as good as being there) and saw that people really liked our tagline: "Mine Your Own Business". :)

To hear the tagline being broadcast proudly on stage by Rachel herself, you can watch the 6 minute presentation below.

We Are Cloud

This 10 minute movie takes you through the establishment of business intelligence: its early beginnings, the invention of data warehouses, the establishment of the first data management companies in the 1970s. Light-hearted and sprinkled with the occasional amusing anecdote, this video does a good job of keeping your attention from start to finish.

Google Planning YouTube On-Demand Video

Google is working on a deal with major Hollywood studios that will allow it to distribute pay-per-view video through YouTube.

If negotiations succeed, YouTube could begin showing top-tier streaming content on demand before the end of the year, according to a report in The Financial Times.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The consumation of such a deal would add significant value to Google TV, the company's effort to integrate the Web and television on the Android-based Google TV platform. The first Google TV device, a Sony TV, is scheduled to ship this fall.

YouTube Adds Video Editing To The Cloud

A quick piece on the video editor encapsulated within YouTube's growing services - pretty cool option if your not savvy with Apple's products (iMovie/Final Cut Pro) or are just wanting to give video editing a try.

Up until now, if YouTube users wanted to combine multiple clips into a single video, they had to use offline editing tools. But YouTube recently rolled out cloud-based video editing tools, giving users a whole new way to remix their existing video assets online.

As detailed in the Google operating system blog, the new YouTube editor allows users to trim video, mix and match clips — even add music. And while the new offering won’t replace more robust video editing software — like Apple’s Final Cut Pro — it will enable users to combine their videos in new and interesting ways.

For Video Delivery, It's Not About a 'Distributed vs. Non-Distributed' Network

Posted by: Derrick Lee

Derrick Lee

For as long as I can remember, there has been this long standing debate inside the content delivery industry regarding which network architecture is better, one that is distributed or non-distributed. While many have opinions on the subject, to me, it's the content owner that decides which is best and not the vendor. Over the years I've spoken to hundreds of customers about the topic and frankly, I think it's time for the industry to redefine what it means to have a "distributed" network and the real metrics should be used when comparing one network to another.

Fifteen years after some of the first CDNs started delivering video, many of the CDNs still want to use their network architecture as a key selling point. While that's natural of any CDN to do, the problem is the way some go about doing it. Today, customers don't ask how many servers a content delivery network has and I can't remember the last time any content owner asked me how many servers any CDN has. While Akamai (AKAM) has spent the last ten years trying to convince everyone that a distributed network is the only way to properly deliver content, the market has shown us that there are now many different ways to deliver video with the a very good level of QoS.

In prior year's, Akamai's distributed network mantra was accurate. When CDNs first started to crop up in the market, they would start off with a few POPs and call themselves a CDN, even though they had very little coverage or capacity. But today, times have changed. The real questions customers ask are about capacity, coverage locations, quality of service and peering, not the number of servers. Those are the details content owners want to know and, as long as a CDN can deliver a good user experience, it doesn't matter to the customer if the network is distributed or non-distributed. How a CDN sets up their network is up to the CDN and most content owners don't care how they do it, only that the service they buy works with their expected level of quality.

There is an UNEQUAL amount of good and bad in most things, the trick is to work out the ratio and act accordingly… The Jester

This new video shows a little more of the XerXeS dashboard, and reveals even more about the attack technique – watch the text box on the left as Jester mentions “Apache” for the first time outside of our private conversations...
