In 2011 online video progressed further towards mainstream viewership. Here's a brief overview of some stats provided by comSore. Of course Google leads the charge as far as video sites go, behind YouTube was VEVO, which captured about a third of the YouTube audience. The report does not say whether YouTube videos viewed where viewed on their main site or from embedded sources across the web -- that may be good to know.

Let's take a look at December 2011, where 182 million U.S. users watched online video content  for an average of 23.2 hours per viewer. The total U.S. Internet audience viewed 43.5 billion videos.

Where's Facebook in all this? With YouTube in first, VEVO in second, you'd think it would be in third place.... wrong. Facebook dropped from third place in November 2011 to fifth place, trailing behind Yahoo and Viacom. Yikes!

In November 2011 nearly 50.8 million unique viewers watched online videos on Facebook.com. In December 2011, the number dropped down to 42 million unique viewers.

Facebook's drop in viewership comes as a shock due the fact that the social giant bumped VEVO off the number two spot with almost 60 million viewers watching 346 million videos.

According to comScore's reports, Facebook lost a total of 18 million unique viewers in two months for online video content posted on Facebook.com. Why? What will happen in 2012?

With the rise of corporate video micro-sites and new hosting sources, this year could shape up to a whole lot different.
